For many people in the UK, alcohol is a pleasant accompaniment to social activities when consumed within safe limits. However, when used to excess it is also an addictive drug and a major cause of ill health and social distress. Alcohol Awareness Week is all about getting the public to think about their drinking habits. Find out more about what Recovery Near You were doing across Wolverhampton during Alcohol Awareness Week to raise awareness of the signs of alcohol misuse, highlight the harms, and signpost available treatment.
Our goal with Alcohol Awareness week is to start many peoples journey into reconsidering the amount of alcohol they drink- and carry on being mindful for the rest of their lives. RNY’s teams were across the city, offering:
Our Drug and Alcohol Liaison Team (DALT) were stationed in New Cross Hospital meeting the community. The DALT team are part of our team and provide support with alcohol misuse across the city.
The DALT team intervenes in cases in A&E and on wards where patients are identified as presenting with drug and alcohol problems. We connect them with Recovery Near You for our treatment programme during their stay.
The DALT team were recently recognised for their groundbreaking and innovative work with The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust at the The annual Royal Awards in Wolverhampton.
The Service User Involvement Team (SUIT) were talking to the public about the advocacy work and support for people experiencing stigma and complex vulnerabilities related to substance abuse. Alongside this, RNY’s clinical treatment team were delivering liver fibro scans at various locations. The teams were across Wolverhampton: they were stationed at at Jaguar Landrover, Bob Jones Community, Rethink Mental Illness Sanctuary Train Station Hub, Wolverhampton City Council, Wednesfield Guru Nanak Gurdwara, and the annual Drink & Drugs News Magazine conference.
SUIT are a Lived Experience Recovery Organisation (LERO) working with Recovery Near You, offering diverse peer-led drug and alcohol support to people struggling with, or in recovery from drugs & alcohol in Wolverhampton.
We held a Summer Fair at the Recovery Hub for the people we support and our staff. Not only did we have a lot of fun, but we also hosted many partner agencies who were speaking to service users about the housing, education and employment support available to them. We are always working with other agencies to make sure every aspect of peoples lives are addresses to sustain long, happy recoveries.
